SECURITY ON THE RED CARPET – A LOOK BEHIND THE SCENES

Red carpet season is upon us, and Joe Dalu and his PGI team have been protecting high-profile performers in the entertainment industry for over 18 years. PGI has been a staple and stable presence behind the scenes at the Golden Globes, Emmys, and Grammys, among other like venues. The professionals at PGI travel from Hollywood to the Big Apple to ensure the “stars” will continue to shine in front of the camera, backstage, and at the after parties.

What most of us don’t know is what it takes to prepare for these mega extravaganzas, and who the people are that safeguard your favorite celebrities and musicians.

Members of PGI’s executive protection team (the professionals who provide event security) have a history of working in law enforcement and/or are former military personnel. PGI also culls experts from the private sector. Here’s a short list of what to look for when hiring an agency to provide event security or personal protection.

IS THE AGENCY PROPERLY LICENSED AND INSURED?
Often enough, some private security companies are not currently and/or properly licensed to provide legal security and investigative services. Some do not possess general liability insurance and if they do, the coverage may not be high enough. Licenses and insurance should go beyond the company itself. You should also ask if their security staff possesses the necessary licenses issued by the state they’re working in. A reputably agency should be thoroughly screened and vetted, and this should include coverage for workers compensation benefits.

IS THE AGENCY DISCREET?
PGI personnel conduct themselves professionally, ensuring privacy for the end client. The personnel are required to sign a strict confidentiality agreement. All personnel have been trained to effectively blend into your environment and be ready at a moment’s notice and within striking distance, so your protection does not interfere with your life or business, and this includes exposure to liability or negative public relations (i.e. bad PR).

DO THE PERSONNEL WANT TO FRIEND YOU?
The staff at PGI understands the importance of a working relationship and will never become too familiar with you. Asking to be friends on Facebook or Instagram should never happen. Social media posts, autograph seeking, and selfies are strictly off limits. We serve in order to know the celebrity professionally, not personally.

DOES THE AGENCY PERFORM A RISK/THREAT ASSESSMENT?
With surveillance technology and investigative techniques, PGI conducts comprehensive assessments of threats to their clients. With knowledge and expertise in protective intelligence, PGI personnel can identify and compromise potential threats before they pose a problem.

WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK (AND YOUR FRONT)
Professionalism, privacy, courtesy, and safety are important to remember when hiring an agency to perform event security or when providing protection for high-profile clients. Besides those four important elements, here’s a brief rundown of what makes PGI different than other event security and personal protection agencies:

• What’s said/done in Hollywood stays in Hollywood
• We never sell secrets
• You never saw us
• CPR/first-aid trained personnel

Whether it’s the Golden Globes, the Grammys, or any of the award shows, you’ll never hear of PGI making headlines or publishing a tell-all book. With years of protecting high-profile clients on the road and in their homes, PGI personnel are discreet professionals versed in protective posturing and surveillance, allowing you to live your life comfortably, without worrying about your safety or that of your loved ones.

Interesting side note: Joe Dalu is a card-holding member of the Screen Actors Guild, “SAG,” which gives him the advantage of truly understanding what the entertainment industry demands are with regard to security and investigative services.
